What happens when a woman becomes a mother during the slow emergency of our ecological crisis?

Allison Davis was nursing her daughter when she read the IPCC report. Twelve years to limit catastrophic warming, less than the length of her childhood. Her body made milk while she realized her daughter's future had a deadline. Behind her house stood a juniper, twisted, scarred, magnificent. Over years of returning to her, Davis learned how the juniper's growth in hostile terrain made ground for what came after. Mother Juniper names maternal ecodistress and traces a developmental path through it, arguing that the wound severing mothers from Earth is the wound at the root of our ecological crisis.

Allison Claire Davis, MS, LPC, PhD (she/her) is a perinatal mental health counselor, researcher, and educator. She teaches at Pacifica Graduate Institute, directs the Maternal Ecopsychology Certification program for clinicians and birth workers, and serves as associate editor of the Journal for Mental Health and Climate Change. She runs Southwest Perinatal Counseling and lives in Galisteo, New Mexico, with her two daughters, among the junipers.
